OTTO Market image requirements

OTTO is Germany's second-largest marketplace and the one most Turkish and Eastern European sellers reach for after Zalando. Its image rules are less rigid than Zalando's but the zoom threshold and the image sequence are where listings usually fall short.

The recommended image sequence

OTTO publishes a recommended order for the gallery, and following it measurably helps because the platform's own merchandising expects it:

  1. Main image — cut-out, product isolated on a light neutral background
  2. 2–3 detail shots — fabric, hardware, construction
  3. Application or size reference — the product in use or in context
  4. Rear or side view
  5. Variants or function graphics after that

Five to eight images is the recommended range. Listings with fewer than five tend to underperform against category competitors regardless of image quality.

How OTTO differs from Amazon

Sellers who arrive from Amazon usually over-restrict themselves:

  • Background is more permissive. OTTO accepts light neutral tones — white, off-white, light grey, light beige. Amazon's exact RGB 255,255,255 is not required.
  • The minimum is lower but the zoom bar is higher. OTTO's floor is 480 × 960 px, but zoom needs 2048 px on a side — a higher threshold than Amazon's 1600 px.
  • Upright framing suits the catalogue. OTTO's fashion grid favours portrait imagery, closer to Zalando's habit than Amazon's square.

Producing for the German market

Two things are worth knowing beyond the specification sheet.

First, German marketplace shoppers return heavily — fashion return rates on German platforms are among the highest in Europe. Imagery that represents fit, fabric weight and true colour accurately is not a nice-to-have; it directly reduces the returns that erode margin.

Second, if you are producing for OTTO you are almost certainly also producing for Zalando. The two have incompatible aspect ratio habits, so plan for it: shoot or generate at a resolution high enough that a 1:1.44 Zalando crop and an OTTO-friendly frame can both be cut from the same master without upscaling.

FAQ

What image size does OTTO Market require?

The official minimum is 480 × 960 px, but images need at least 2048 px on a side for the zoom function to work. The maximum side length is approximately 4500 px.

What background does OTTO require for the main image?

The main image must be a cut-out on a light neutral background — white, off-white, light grey or light beige are all acceptable. Unlike Amazon, exact pure white is not mandatory. The product should fill about 85% of the frame.

How many images should an OTTO listing have?

Five to eight is the recommended range, in this order: cut-out main image, two to three detail shots, an application or size reference, then a rear or side view, followed by variants or function graphics.

Which file formats does OTTO Market accept?

JPG and PNG only, in the RGB colour space with an sRGB profile. TIFF and BMP are rejected, and CMYK files cause colour distortion.
